Haiti is the poorest country of the Western Hemisphere. This is mainly because of the earthquake, which basically destructed everything(more in Haiti's Earthquake section). Ever since then, life in Haiti is hard. It is a daily struggle to survive there. Most people are homeless and have no shelter, food, and barely any water.
